This island where we stand
Is being stolen by the waves.
We dig toes into sand

The sand that disappears from one shore finds its way to the creation of new lands.

I keep coming back to this one. As a geologist I consider the continual redistribution of sands around the world as inevitable. Eroding from mountains to beaches, taken by storms and carried along wave energy from shore to shore, eventually buried and lithified and rising up with tectonic forces to become mountains again. I shake my head a bit when I read news articles about people lamenting the loss of their beautiful beaches and moving great volumes of sand at great cost to rebuild their beaches again and again.
