The Military Working Dog

How can I thank you?
When you never had a choice?

And yet I do.
Every day I ponder the life
Of a creature who traded places with me
On the stairway to the eternal.

What does it say about me?
To be so inspired by a beast?
Or what does it say about a beast?
That he should so inspire the hearts of men?

Such combinations!
Of loyalty and love,
Grace and bravery,
Strength and innocence.

Should that such combinations exist within my own heart
But I am merely a man,
Clumsy and corrupt.
Not like you, unsullied with the nonsense of men.

How can I thank you?
When you never had a choice?

I don’t know what to think about that
I don’t know how to think about that
But my gratefulness will endure
For as long as my corrupt heart will beat.

Author’s note: I wrote this poem in honor of Jany (“yawn-ee”), a military working dog who lost his life in combat, directly saving myself and other Rangers in the process. If it weren’t for Jany, there is no question that I would not be alive today.

There is such a bond, a connection of the heart. My son-in law was a k-9 handler for 8 years in the military. I saw that connection. I am sorry for your loss.

Your words are moving, inspiring and courageous. Dogs, so often, represent the best qualities of mankind. They are our friends, our protectors and even a confidant for they have no tales to tell. They hold no judgment of our faults. But something I know of dogs…they know hearts. They know their people. And in that knowledge, they do love without reservation. This warrior, may he Rest In Peace, laid down his life in protection of his family.

Thank you for sharing your story and that of this hero.

This one affected me deeply. Thanks, Luke. Beautiful tribute to a creature of great heart. I do believe there is a place for loving and dedicated animals in heaven. I don’t believe God gave them to us to enjoy only briefly.

Luke- Beautiful article. I had a great puppy that went to work in a Sheriff’s Dept in California. I think of her often. She protected my family from a threat one evening when I was on duty.

Lovely tribute. I lost my dog over a year ago. Still breaks my heart. Thank God for our cherry friends!
